The Calming Stone

The base form is covered in a textured, dry volcanic glaze to evoke the feel of stone. Next are individual layers of thin unglazed porcelain which are encouraged to ripple and move during the making and firing processes. Seemingly delicately resting on top is a gold teardrop form, mottled to create an aged, weathered feel. The way I have treated each element of this piece highlights the varied qualities of ceramics by way of contrasts. Rough surfaces accentuate the thin ruffled edges of the stacked sheets and in turn the shiny metallic finish on the teardrop form.
